Health and Care Worker Visa After NMC Registration: What African Nurses Need to Know (2026)

An NMC PIN proves you're allowed to practise. It doesn't let you work in the UK. That's a separate legal step, the Health and Care Worker Visa. And if you've seen headlines about the UK banning overseas care worker recruitment, the important thing to know upfront: that change does not apply to registered nurses.
Your NMC PIN and Your Work Visa Are Two Different Things
Passing the CBT and OSCE and receiving your NMC PIN confirms you're professionally registered to practise nursing in the UK. It is not permission to live or work there. Once you have a confirmed job offer from an NHS trust or approved employer, you apply separately for the Health and Care Worker Visa, a dedicated sub-category of the Skilled Worker visa built specifically for doctors, nurses, and other eligible health and social care professionals.

The 2025 Care Worker Changes Don't Apply to Nurses
From 22 July 2025, care workers (SOC 6135) and senior care workers (SOC 6136) lost eligibility for brand-new overseas visa applications, with only limited transitional arrangements for people already in the UK on other visas. This has generated a lot of understandably worried coverage. But it's a change specific to those two care-worker occupation codes. Registered nurses (SOC 2231) and most other clinical professional roles were not affected by this change and remain fully eligible for new overseas sponsorship under the Health and Care Worker Visa.
English Requirement: A Second Check, Not a Repeat of OET
From January 2026, new visa applicants must separately demonstrate English at CEFR Level B2 across reading, writing, speaking and listening, via an approved test or exemption. This is a Home Office immigration requirement, distinct from the OET/IELTS requirement the NMC itself sets for professional registration; passing your NMC English requirement doesn't automatically satisfy the separate visa requirement, so check both are covered before applying. For the NMC's own English requirement, see NMC CBT vs OSCE: What African Nurses Should Know Before Starting.
Bringing Dependants
- Your spouse or partner and children under 18 can apply as dependents alongside you.
- Dependants have the right to work freely in the UK and are exempt from the IHS under this route, the same exemption you receive.
- If your specific role sits below RQF Level 6 and isn't on the Immigration Salary List, dependant eligibility is restricted this is unlikely to affect registered nurses, whose roles typically clear RQF Level 6, but it's worth confirming your exact occupation code classification with your employer or an immigration adviser before assuming dependants are automatically included.
The Path to Settlement
Time spent on the Health and Care Worker Visa counts toward Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after 5 years, provided you continue meeting the eligibility requirements job offer, salary threshold, and continuous UK residence. From 25 February 2026, visas are issued as digital eVisas rather than physical biometric residence permits, so keep your online UKVI account details secure and accessible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need a job offer before applying for the Health and Care Worker Visa?
Yes. You need a Certificate of Sponsorship from an approved UK employer, an NHS trust, an NHS supplier, or a CQC-regulated care provider before you can apply. This is separate from your NMC registration, which you can complete before securing a job offer.
Q: Does the 2025 UK ban on overseas care worker visas affect registered nurses?
No. The July 2025 change specifically removed new overseas visa eligibility for care workers (SOC 6135) and senior care workers (SOC 6136). Registered nurses (SOC 2231) and other clinical professional roles are unaffected and remain fully eligible for the Health and Care Worker Visa.
Q: What is the minimum salary for a nurse on the Health and Care Worker Visa?
You must be paid the highest of £25,000 a year, £12.82 an hour, or the published going rate for your occupation code. For NHS-employed nurses, pay aligned with Agenda for Change Band 5 comfortably clears this floor in practice.
Q: Can my family come with me on a Health and Care Worker Visa?
Yes. Your spouse or partner and children under 18 can apply as dependents, have the right to work in the UK, and are exempt from the Immigration Health Surcharge, the same as you are on this route.
