How to Apply for NMBI Ireland Registration Complete Guide for International Nurses and Midwives

NMBI registration is the mandatory licensing process for nurses and midwives wishing to practice in Ireland. Administered by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), the process for internationally educated nurses involves an education assessment, a fitness to practice review, and — where required — a period of adaptation or aptitude test. International applicants must also meet English language requirements. NEAC manages the complete NMBI registration pathway on behalf of international nurse and midwife applicants.
What Is the NMBI Ireland?
NMBI Ireland registration is the formal process by which internationally educated nurses and midwives have their qualifications assessed against Irish nursing standards. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland evaluates academic and clinical credentials, reviews professional fitness, and may require an adaptation period or aptitude test before issuing full registration. NMBI registration is the legal prerequisite for nursing or midwifery practice in any Irish healthcare setting — public or private.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a compensation measure in the NMBI process?
A compensation measure is an additional requirement of NMBI. Applicants whose qualifications and experience do not fully meet Irish standards may be required to complete a compensation measure. For applicants to the General Nurse or Psychiatric Nurse divisions, the NMBI provides a choice between a Period of Adaptation or an Aptitude Test when a compensation measure is required. Please note that Aptitude Tests are not available for divisions other than General Nurses and Psychiatric Nurses.
Do I need to be in Ireland to apply for NMBI registration?
No. The NMBI application and document submission phase can be completed from outside Ireland. However, if a compensation measure is required, you will need to be physically present in Ireland to complete it.
Does an NMC UK PIN exempt me from the NMBI process?
No. NMBI Ireland and NMC UK are separate regulatory bodies. A UK NMC PIN does not automatically grant Irish registration. However, nurses registered with NMC UK may benefit from a simplified assessment due to the similar standards between UK and Irish nursing education frameworks.
What English language score does NMBI require?
NMBI requires IELTS Academic with a minimum overall score of 6.5 and no band below 6.0, or OET Nursing with a minimum of Grade B in all four components. Nurses who completed their entire nursing education in English may be exempt.
Can Filipino nurses apply for NMBI Ireland registration?
Yes. Filipino nurses are eligible to apply for NMBI Ireland registration. A BSN degree, valid PRC license, and English language qualification are required. NEAC has supported many Filipino nurses through the full NMBI process.
