Big News for Ontario Nurses: RN Prescribing Education Gets the Green Light!

Say hello to the year ahead because exciting new changes are up ahead  in Ontario’s healthcare scene! On December 6, 2023, the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) Council made a groundbreaking decision that's set to revolutionize nursing practices across the province. They’ve officially approved RN prescribing education programs and introduced a new RN Prescribing practice standard. Let's unpack what this means for nurses and patient care in Ontario.

A Leap Forward for Nursing Practice

This initiative by the CNO Council is aimed at ensuring the highest standards of patient care and safety in medication prescription. The move is set to empower Registered Nurses with the requisite qualifications, education, and competencies to prescribe medications and communicate diagnoses, a previously limited aspect of their role.

Comprehensive Education Programs for RNs

The Council’s approval of four RN prescribing education programs comes after a thorough review process. Katie Dilworth, the Education Manager at CNO, emphasizes the rigor and research backing these programs. They are crafted to incorporate safe clinical practices and fully integrate RN prescribing competencies, ensuring a well-rounded approach to nurse education. A Notation of Excellence -

An important aspect of this initiative is the public notation on the CNO’s Register, “Find a Nurse”, for RNs completing these programs. This notation serves as a public acknowledgment of their prescribing authority, enhancing the profession's transparency and public trust. The "Find a Nurse" feature is an online directory provided by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). It serves as a public register, offering an accessible and transparent method for individuals to verify the credentials, qualifications and specialization, status, as well as the historical information of Registered Nurses (RNs), Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs), and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in Ontario, Canada.
