What are the NMC-UK English Language Modifications that have been implemented?

The ability to communicate clearly and effectively is essential to providing high-quality care and the upkeep of public trust in the nursing and midwifery professions. Hence, it is one of the main requirements set by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of the United Kingdom (NMC-UK). As the number of nurses and midwives continues to rise to get registered in the UK, the Nursing and Midwifery Board ensures that internationally qualified nurses and midwives have the ability and resources to demonstrate the level of competency required as they are responsible for the safety of the public health, to give excellent, reliable, and compassionate healthcare assistance. As a result, they implemented some modifications to preserve their high standard.

What are the key changes to the NMC-UK English Language Requirements for those interested in applying?

1. Combining the English Language Test Scores

The required test scores for each domain in IELTS or OET remain unchanged. However, if you fail the first time, you can retake the exam and combine your marks across two sittings. But note that you cannot combine an OET and IELTS test scores.

To be eligible to combine your test scores for IELTS, you must not have less than 6.5 for listening, reading, and speaking and below 6 for writing.

You may combine your OET scores if you do not have a below grade of C+ for listening, reading, and speaking or below C for writing.

2. Required period to combine the results increased.

Before, you must retake the test within six (6) months of sitting the first test to combine your scores. But now, it has been extended to twelve (12) months to allow for greater flexibility and preparation time before retaking the test.

Accepting supporting documentation from an employer

In rare cases, candidates can produce supporting documentation from their employers as further evidence of their English language proficiency. So if you have worked for your employer for at least 12 months in the last two years in a health and social care environment in the UK, supplemental supporting information from your employer demonstrating your ability to communicate effectively in English will be accepted.

These improvements will make it easier for more competent, internationally educated professionals to join the NMC register. They will also guarantee that nursing and midwifery practitioners have the English language ability to communicate with patients and colleagues on the frequently complicated issues that occur in the pressured conditions of clinical practice in a clear, sensitive, and caring manner.
