1. Eligibility Determination

Before anything else, confirm that you meet the minimum requirements set by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN):

  • Graduation from an approved nursing program
  • Completion of required coursework (including specific clinical hours)
  • Fulfillment of any additional California-specific requirements

        2. Application Submission

Once eligibility is confirmed, proceed with the official application through the nurse portal.

        • Complete the 'Application for Licensure by Examination' form.
        • Pay the required application fee.

                3. Background Check

This is where your organizational skills will be tested. Assemble the following documents:

                • Official Transcripts: Sent directly from your nursing school to the BRN.
                • Criminal Background Check: This includes submitting your fingerprint impressions. The BRN conducts a thorough background check, which can take several weeks. Be patient and ensure all information you provide is accurate.
                • Proof of Completion: If your nursing program is outside California, you might need to provide additional documentation proving you've met all requirements.
                • Passport-Style Photo: Recent, clear photo meeting specific requirements.
                • Additional Documents: Depending on your situation, you might need to submit additional documents, such as proof of English proficiency or name change documentation.
